Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a powerful, noninvasive treatment for a range of painful conditions that limit your mobility and lower your quality of life.

Shockwave therapy is available for adults and adolescents who want to reduce their reliance on medications and avoid invasive treatments like surgery and cortisone injections, providing lasting symptom relief from arthritis, injuries, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy uses high-energy focused sound waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues and joints.

The goals of shockwave therapy are to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes, trigger cell regeneration, break up fascia adhesions, reduce scar tissue, and enhance blood circulation.

We offer shockwave therapy for adults and adolescents who want to reduce pain, inflammation, and other symptoms without medications or invasive therapies.

The Type of Shockwave Therapy We Use

We use Richard Wolf’s advanced PiezoWave2 technology to deliver deep sound waves into inflamed tissues or painful joints without harming surrounding tissue. PiezoWave2 is a form of focused shockwave therapy that can go up to 4 inches deep into the tissue. Radial shockwave therapy, as a comparison, can only reach about 1 inch of depth.

Shockwave Therapy: Who is it Good For?

You might be a good candidate for the shockwave therapy if you’re interested in a noninvasive solution to treat pain or other symptoms of:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bone spurs
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Scar tissue
  • Trigger points
  • Contracted muscles
  • Fascial adhesions
  • Neuropathy
  • Cellulite
  • Joint calcifications
  • Bone healing
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Pelvic pain

Our team also uses shockwave therapy to treat pain and injury nearly anywhere on the body including the back, shoulders, neck, wrists, ankles, feet, hands, hips, elbows, and knees.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

During your shockwave therapy appointment, our team applies the PiezoWave2 device to the surface of your skin. The technology delivers sound waves into damaged tissue or joints.

When the treatment reaches damaged tissue, you'll feel an aching feeling. Your provider will adjust the power so you can feel the treatment working but not experience significant pain. As the treatment works, the aching feeling from deep sound waves starts to diminish and your provider can increase the power accordingly. Patients appreciate how the treatment can find their areas of pain, arthritis, and injury.

How Much Shockwave Therapy is Needed to See Results?

Treatment typically takes 10-15 minutes per area, depending on the condition you’re treating. You may need 3-5 additional treatments every 1-2 weeks depending on the severity of your condition. Nearly all patients leave the office with an improved range of motion and decreased pain.

What's the Recovery Time from Shockwave Therapy?

You can return to your usual activities immediately without limitations after your shockwave therapy session. There’s minimal risk for side effects, but you might experience mild soreness in the treated areas for a few days.

After the full course of treatment, pain and other symptoms should be less noticeable, and your mobility should increase.

Shockwave Therapy vs. PEMF: What's the Difference?

Both Shockwave Therapy and PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) are effective tools for healing and pain relief. However, they work in different ways:

  • PEMF: Uses pulsed magnetic fields to stimulate cellular repair and improve circulation. It can be applied locally or with a full-body mat for general wellness. While effective, PEMF often requires daily use for optimal results, making it well-suited for home treatment. While a range of PEMF devices exist, it's important to choose wisely. Many offer limited power and results, so investing in a high-quality device is crucial for optimal therapeutic benefits. We can help guide you to find the best home PEMF device for your particular needs.
  • Shockwave Therapy: Delivers focused acoustic waves to injured tissues, promoting faster healing, breaking up scar tissue, and pain reduction. It's particularly effective for targeted treatment of arthritis and injuries, often providing quicker and more noticeable results compared to PEMF.

Can I Combine Shockwave Therapy with Other Local Treatments?

Our team may recommend other therapies in addition to shockwave therapy for more severe pain, arthritis, and injury including:
